Arnaldo Pomodoro: Art that Reveals the Invisible
🇬🇧 🎨 Arnaldo Pomodoro: Art that Reveals the Invisible
Born in Morciano di Romagna on June 23, 1926, and passed away on June 22, 2025, Arnaldo Pomodoro was one of the most important voices in contemporary Italian sculpture. Raised between geometry and art, he initially worked in jewelry and theater, before finding his distinctive artistic language in bronze.
His most iconic work, Sphere Within Sphere, was created in 1966 for the Montreal Expo. These fractured spheres, symbolizing the contrast between outer perfection and inner complexity, have since appeared in public spaces around the world — from the Vatican to the UN, and at major universities and museums.
🛠️ Language and Vision
Pomodoro liked to “break perfect forms to reveal their core,” creating visual tension that combined clarity and introspection.
The polished surfaces, broken by deep fissures, suggest mechanical or organic worlds — reflections of human fragility and the tension between technology and nature.
🌍 Global Impact
Beyond spheres, Pomodoro created monumental columns, discs, and architectural forms, often integrated into natural or urban environments. He exhibited on nearly every continent and taught art at Stanford University, UC Berkeley, and Mills College.
🏛️ A Living Legacy
In 1995, he founded the Arnaldo Pomodoro Foundation in Milan, a cultural center devoted to conservation, research, and the promotion of contemporary sculpture.
Even after his passing, his legacy continues to inspire. His works express the complexity of our time with elegance, visual power, and philosophical depth.
Pomodoro taught us that art is not just an image, but a meeting of the visible and invisible, order and chaos, surface and core. His sculptures invite us to look beyond, to find beauty even in the cracks, and to reflect on our human nature.
