Shell and Maritime Museum: A Journey into Rimini’s Maritime Tradition
In the heart of the Viserbella district, north of Rimini, there is a small but fascinating museum that tells the story of the local maritime and fishing traditions: the Shell and Maritime Museum, managed by the cultural association E Scaion. The name of the association comes from the iron tool used for clam fishing, a symbol of the area's maritime heritage.
A Museum That Tells the Story of the Sea
Housed in a former school building on Via Minguzzi 7, the museum offers a journey into the past through:
Fishing tools and artifacts: over 600 original objects including nets, oars, anchors, rudders, and carpentry and caulking tools.
The Capici Collection: one of the most important collections of Mediterranean shells, with about 8,000 specimens from across the basin.
Marine fossils: a section dedicated to fossils donated by Ivilia Rosa from Turin, enriching the exhibition.
Boat models: scale replicas of batane, marotte, and trabaccoli—typical fishing boats from Rimini’s tradition.
Historical photos and videos: over 400 images and films documenting Rimini’s maritime life from 1912 to the 1960s.
A Living Museum
In addition to visiting the exhibition rooms, the museum offers:
Guided tours with voluntary donations, deepening knowledge of local history and traditions.
Educational workshops for schools and groups to introduce young people to maritime culture.
Summer events and activities, including participation in the life of the Viserbella village and visits to the “Vanina” boat, a real “Vele al Terzo” sailboat that serves as a floating museum.
Opening Hours
The museum is open during the summer season (June to September) on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday evenings from 8:30 PM to 11:00 PM. Admission is free, with guided tours offered for voluntary donations.
