Journey into Tradition: Discover the Museum of Uses and Customs of the People of Romagna in Santarcangelo di Romagna
An authentic immersion into the daily life and popular culture of Romagna
In the heart of the medieval village of Santarcangelo di Romagna lies a special place where past and present meet to tell stories of hard work, joy, and identity: the Museum of Uses and Customs of the People of Romagna. Founded in 1981 thanks to the passion of ethnographers and volunteers, this museum offers a living window into Romagna’s rural and artisan world, preserving and passing down the roots of a still-vibrant culture.
A community-born cultural project
The museum is housed in the former municipal slaughterhouse, a building repurposed and enhanced to showcase rich ethnographic collections. Its goal is to bring Romagna’s popular traditions back to life, telling the stories of old trades, festivals, costumes, dialects, and rituals through over twelve thematic sections.
What awaits inside?
Daily life and family: traditional clothing, everyday tools, stories of domestic and community customs
Spinning and weaving: ancient looms and tools for working flax, hemp, and cotton, revealing the patience and creativity of those who transformed raw materials into precious fabrics
Craftsmanship and labor: from blacksmith and boiler maker tools to baking trays for piadina, Romagna’s iconic flatbread
The mill and milling: a journey showing the evolution of flour production, from stones to modern machinery
Popular theater: a section dedicated to the Salici Puppet Company, with masks and traditional figures that bring 19th-century stories of humor and satire to life
Between memory and participation
The museum is not just a collection of objects but a real cultural workshop. Contemporary installations called “Cumuli e Digressioni” encourage dialogue between past and present, while events, workshops, and guided tours engage adults and children in memorable experiences.
