HISTORY
Paolo and Francesca are two characters really existed.
Francesca hoped that her father would find her a nice and kind husband, instead he, in 1275, decided to give his daughter's hand to Giovanni Malatesta (called Giangiotto, Giovanni lame).
To avoid possible rejection by the young Francesca, the lords of Rimini and Ravenna plotted the deception: sending Paolo il Bello, brother of Giangiotto, to Ravenna.
Francesca accepted with joy and on the wedding day, she happily pronounced her "yes" without knowing that Paolo married her "artificially" on behalf of his brother Giangiotto. Francesca soon resigned and had a daughter.
Paul often visited his sister-in-law and regretted having lent himself to deception!
One of the brothers noticed the secret meetings between Paolo and Francesca and advised Giangiotto, who, every morning, left for Pesaro to carry out his duties as podestà, to return late in the evening.
He pretended to leave, but returned from a secret passage and, while Paul and Frances read in ecstasy the story of Lancelot and Guinevere, "as if he loved them", they gave each other a chaste kiss.
Just at that moment Giangiotto opened the door and blinded by jealousy he drew his sword.
Paolo tried to save himself by passing through the trap door, but the dress got caught in a nail, he had to go back and, while Giangiotto was about to kill him with the sword, Francesca thought to save him and so killed both of them.
