
THE VENICE OF EMILIA-ROMAGNA
Comacchio is a small town located in the province of Ferrara, 3 kilometers from the sea and close to the
po river delta.
Also called "little Venice" because of its canals, behind the name of the city of Comacchio there
Could be a couple of different origins.
One interpretation is that it is derived from the Greek " Kuma ";, or "wave" and that it then became
"Cumaculum, "small wave".
Instead, others would lead it back to " Commeatulus ", which means "gathering of
bumps", indicating the fact that the country was founded on 13 islets.
The first settlements in the area date back to the VII-VIII century AD..
Later there were other residential centers, until the late Roman period, which date back to the findings of some villas
and the Fortuna Maris, a Roman boat with its precious cargo inside.
The content recovered by the Roman ship is currently on display at the Museo Delta Antico, where
also preserved an extensive collection of archaeological objects found in the area.
Among the other attractions not to be missed is definitely the Trepponti, a real symbol of
Comacchio, and is also highly recommended a boat excursion to the Valli di Comacchio.
Moreover, since 2015, thanks to its strategic position on the Po Delta, Comacchio has become the
Birdwatching, making it a great attraction for thousands of European birdwatchers, especially during
the Birdwatching Fair, biennial held in May.
The best time to visit Comacchio is undoubtedly in the period between the first days
spring and early autumn.
In particular, the first two weekends of the month of
October, during which the eel festival is held, an exceptional product of Comacchio.
Finally, other relevant events that take place in Comacchio during the summer months are the Comacchio Beach
Festival and the Pink Night.
