One of the smallest states in the world, it stands on Monte Titano and recounts ancient traditions. Suggestive are the Three Towers, the Basilica del Santo in neo-classical style (19th century), the Monastery of Santa Chiara where it is possible to visit exhibitions of great value. The Palio delle Balestre Grandi is famous and it is pleasant to go shopping in the centre, at very competitive prices. According to historical tradition, the ancient Republic of San Marino was founded by a Dalmatian stonemason, Marino, to whom Diocletian had entrusted the task of restoring the walls of Rimini. Marino, with his colleague and friend Leo were Christians and to escape the persecutions desired by the emperor, one took refuge on Monte Feretrio, the other on Monte Titano. From a 10th-century manuscript Marino is remembered as the "libertatis fundator" of the small Republic. San Marino has in fact a territory of 61 square km.
