ON THE HILLS OF HISTORY
Rimini and its surroundings offer beauty, art and fun for the whole family, but Rimini's "fun" is often also made up of great follies. For those seeking a bit of calm and tranquillity, the innermost areas are ideal.
An excellent stop can be Verucchio, where history, tradition and culture blend with the rare scenic beauty.
During the walk in the village it is possible to see two mighty fortresses:
- the Rocca del Passerello, on whose farms there is a monastic convent.
- the Rocca Malatestiana, built between the 12th and 15th centuries to dominate the town, the valley and the plain.
La Rocca is one of the largest and best preserved areas of Verucchio and hosts a permanent exhibition with Villanovan finds. If you are lucky enough to visit the village on a fine day, you can admire a breathtaking panorama, where the eye sweeps along the whole valley up to the coast of Rimini.
Once we leave Verucchio, near Ponte Verucchio, we find the road that leads to the Madonna di Saiano. It is a small convent, located on a spur of rock, a destination for pilgrimages and a place of prayer. Inside this small convent is the plaster statue of the Madonna.
There is a curious fact: it seems that this statue miraculously moved several times from the little church of Montebello to Saiano.
A few kilometers from Pennabilli, it is possible to enjoy a nature trail, a real corner of paradise.
Another suggestive location in the area is Canaiolo, where there is a wonderful pool where you can immerse yourself, a stream where the water is clear and fresh.
Next to Canaiolo is the lake of Andreuccio (or Soanne), famous thanks to a legend from the 1300s which tells of the unhappy love between Elisabetta, daughter of Count Evaristo di Carpegna, and the shepherd boy Andreuccio, who was killed and then thrown in the mirror of water from the father of the beloved, who then committed suicide.
The lake is an oasis of serenity surrounded by greenery, an area much appreciated by sport fishing enthusiasts.
