WORLD PHOTOGRAPHY DAY
World Photography Day is celebrated on August 19th.
In an era of new discoveries and inventions such as the steam engine and hot air balloons, man begins to feel the need to immortalize those moments, not only through memory but through a tangible memory.
Joseph Nicéphore Niépce, a typical upper middle class man of the late eighteenth century, begins to devote himself to inventions after the Revolution of 1789.
In the 1820s, Niépce begins his attempts to fix images on a silver plate, sprinkling it with bitumen of Judea, to obtain a negative image.
He meets Louis Daguerre and together they found the company “Niépce-Daguerre”. The silver foil technique is then perfected by Daguerre.
On January 7, 1839 in Paris, the invention of the daguerreotype is registered at the Academy of Sciences. The French government immediately purchased the rights for public use, sharing the invention with the world.
